How To Choose Your First Ney - The Complete Tutorial

Which Ney Should I Choose as a Beginner Player

Choosing the right ney as a beginner can be challenging.
There are many types of neys, including different styles like Arabic ney and Turkish ney.
So, which one is best for a beginner?
Let's start with the fundamental distinction: Arabic Ney vs. Turkish Ney.

Plastic or Reed Ney?

Once we've chosen the type of ney (Arabic or Turkish), the next step is selecting the material—plastic or reed.
We highly recommend that every player, whether beginner, advanced, or professional, own a plastic ney.
Plastic neys are easy to maintain, produce sound more easily, and are travel-friendly without the risk of breaking.
Watch this video for more details.

Which Ney Tuning Should I choose As A Beginner Player?

Now that you've chosen the ney you want to purchase, the next step is selecting the right tuning as a beginner.
The most recommended options are D – Dukah (Re) or E – Bolahenk (Mi).
These tunings strike a balance—not too short, not too long—making it easier to produce sound and hold the ney comfortably while playing.
Additionally, both are widely used in Arabic and Turkish music, ensuring compatibility with most traditional pieces.

Premium Reed Ney for Beginner & Professional Players

Some beginners choose to start with a premium-quality ney from day one.
But what does "premium quality" mean? It refers to a ney made from carefully selected, top-grade reeds that have been dried for an extended period. The crafting process is highly precise and takes longer to ensure the best results.
